Side by side is a project designed in Talent Garden for Roche Italia, under the supervision of Sketchin.

the challenge

We were asked to facilitate the journey of patients affected by melanoma, encouraging doctors to prescribe the treatment produced by Roche. Our overall goal was to integrate and value the services offered by Roche through a user-centred mindset. The ultimate business goal was to facilitate the transition of the company as healthcare provider.

the team

Our team was very heterogeneous and consisted of Pier Paolo Pernici, Maria Giovanna Senatore, Nicola Buratti, and me. We took part together in all the phases of this project, Maria Giovanna Senatore focused on research, me on UX storytelling, and Pier Paolo Pernici on prototyping. Our stakeholders were Fabrizio Bellina, Marketing & Customer Innovation Manager in Roche, and Monica Forchetta, President of Italian Association for melanoma Patients.

We can separated our design thinking process in five steps:

1 - First immersion.
Client brief, listening, understanding, brief analysis. Preliminary research, study of business and strategic goals, domain analysis. Market and competitors analysis.

2 - Empathise and research
We tried to gain an empathic understanding of the problem we were trying to solve.

3 - Define
We worked to put the informations gathered in the second phase in system, looking for findings, pain points, needs and insights.

5 - Prototype
We worked on these insights in order to find a solution. Then we started to work on wireframe and prototype.

We set up qualitative interviews to understand feelings and needs of doctors and patients. We gathered important informations to work about and to turn them into insights. We succeeded to map their journey and to define personas.

1 - People with cancer often feel lonely. Loneliness is a fundamental aspect of the disease: they feel lonely to discover the disease, lonely to informate their family and during the treatment.

We wanted help them to share their story, to connect them with other patients, with people who live or used to live the same experience.

2 - People are afraid of what they do not understand. Patients feel that doctors do not really listen, they are in constantly seek of information, so they usually gather informations on their own, basically on web.

We wanted to promote a participatory approach to medicine, a more active role in the process of that care. We wanted to facilitate the access to safe and verified informations. We wanted to facilitate informed decisions.

3 - Doctors spend 80% of their working hours doing activities we would facilitate by modern technology.

Technology would be very essential to facilitate the relationship between doctors and patients, to facilitate the access of medical chronicles, to monitorate the therapy or to take action in case of undesirable effects.
